English II Honors -- Anthem Reflection Question

We learned about the author, Ayn Rand, and her past and how that impacted the ideas in her novels.
We read Chapter 1 and had some great discussions about education, work, freedom or the lack thereof, etc.

I want you to now make a connection between the novel and the image below:

Image result for fairness

Explain in your own words what the image is saying and how it applies to the novel.

Responses due by November 7 before midnight.
Bring your responses on paper to class or you can post your answer below as a comment.  (Make sure to include your name and period.)

  1. Equality is treating everyone the same no matter who they are or what they do as in the image the 2 boys have 1 box to step on but the small child still cannot see the baseball game. When it comes to justice that means to provide a person with something that they are in need of also explained in the image, the smallest child needed 2 boxes to see the game. Equality and justice have different meanings , equality is treating everyone the same no matter what and justice means to provide the necessary needs for a specific person.

  2. In the picture there is equality, all of the people have one crate but it is not justice because the child still cannot see. In the story "Anthem" there is equality because everybody is treated the same and are labeled the same. But, there is no justice because it is not fair. Equality and justice may seem similar but they have completely different meanings.

Equality is being treated the same and in the same status or shape. As in the picture , they are being treated equal since they all have a box. Justice, on the other hand,is moral righteousness based on rationality, religion, etc.In the other picture, justice is present because they all have boxes, and are all able to see the game. In Anthem, equality is present because everyone is under the same status and state of being. However, there is no justice because some are different from the rest, yet not put in jobs they could excel in because they are feared. Equality and justice are in the same league, but not on the same team.

  4. The images show a display of people getting treated equally by being given just one box to stand on but the small child can't reach over to see anything, while in the image that displays justice they can l see. Sheila r period 4

  5. The fence in both pictures represent the systematic barrier between the citizens and the government. In the first picture, it is supposed to represent "equality" when in reality no one has room to excel in life just as the two boys who cannot see the game. In the second picture, the two boys are given more boxes so that they can see the game meaning that they need more help from the government. Although the second picture represents "justice" I have to disagree. By taking down the fence, you're breaking the barrier between the government and the citizens. In the second picture, the government is still involved and making the people DEPENDENT on the government, which in that case it isn't any different from the first one. By taking down the fence they all get to see and they aren't dependent on the government. In the book Anthem, the first picture fits the message that the story is trying to make. "Everyone is treated equal" when in reality no one will be able to succeed because of the idea that everyone is treated the same.

Equality is being treated or getting the same thing as others. That is why the picture on the left shows 3 people with different height but one box for all. However, the picture on the right is justice by allowing what each person needs to be able to see. The tall person doesn't need a box but the average person needs 1 while the small child requires 2. This comes to show that equality does not mean justice, it goes with the book Anthem because everyone is treated the same and because of that most people wont be living up to there full potential.

This image represents equality and justice, in one of the pictures it represents equality, because they people in the picture are treated equal and in the other picture it represents justice which the people in the picture are leveled different. This connects to the story because in the story the people are all treated equal and it's not fair for them.

The image is saying that there's a difference between equality and justice, while showing a preference to justice. In the Equality section of the image, all three subjects are given equal treatment, despite their clear advantages and disadvantages to being able to see the ball game in front of them. In the Justice section of the image, each person is serviced differently, as to be able to experience true equality through justice. The image applies to the novel in the way that Equality 7-2521 can be viewed as the child in the Equality section of the image. He is different from other people in that he is more intelligent than them, but is limited by their intelligence, such as how the child is limited in how he's unable to watch the ball game.

Justice is fairness to all while equality is for everything to be the same. In Anthem, everyone has equality but it doesn't necessarily mean that they're living life fairly. Both words have a connection but they do not mean the same thing. On the left, everyone is given one box (equality) to see the ball game. On the right, since it is unfair to the small person, the box was taken from the taller one so that they could see the game.

  10. In the picture, equality shows that everyone gets a box in order to be equal, despite certain disadvantages or advantages the three people may have. In the image where they are all equal, the one box only affects some or does not affect or help others. For justice, the three people are given the boxes they need to accommodate for their disadvantages. The tall person is given no box, for he needs no box to see over the fence, the medium person is given one box so he could see. Finally the short person is given two boxes in order to see. The way it relates to anthem is that everyone is treated the same way despite their advantages or disadvantages. Equality feels he is not challenged in school because he is smart, but the government does not care. Union isn't as smart as the other kids, but again the government does not care. They treat these two who are at different paces than the "normal" kids equally instead of the treatment they deserve.

In the picture, equality is everyone being treated the same while justice is leaning more on being fair. In the book Anthem, it shows equality because they are treated the same no matter if it helps them or not. The Government gives everyone the same circumstances and doesn't care if its beneficial or not for everyone because they are being treated "equally."

The picture shows equality because all three boys have a box but the shorter boy still can't see the game even though he has a box like everyone else that's equality not justice. The taller boy gave the shorter one his box so he would be able to see that's justice. In the book anthem everyone is treated equally which is equality but since everyone is different they have different accommodations so that it can be called "justice".

In the picture for equality everyone is standing on one box, but there is a disadvantage for the shorter boy which is the fact that he is unable to see the game. In the picture for justice (on the right) it shows all 3 boys standing on different amounts of boxes allowing everyone to see the game together. This relates to Anthem because everyone is treated "equally" but there are still disadvantages for other people who do not deserve to be treated the same as everyone else.

In the one that says equality it shows everyone one with the same box which isn't fair since one kid cannot see over the fence and in the justice on it shows different sizes of boxes but all the kids can see over the fence. This relates to anthem because just because everyone is treated equally and the same that doesn't mean its justice for them. Some may suffer or abuse the system depending on their intellect

In the left image, the three people all have a box, representing equality, but the smaller person isn't able to watch over. In the right image, justice is represented in the fact that the taller person gave up his box so that the smaller person could be able to watch over the fence. The connection that these two images have towards the novel "Anthem" is that in the novel, everyone is treated equally. Just that not everyone deserves justice since everyone is equal.

On the image to the left, we see three kids standing on the same size box so they can reach over the fence to see. Though, because the boxes are the same size, one of the shorter kids can't see. On the image to the right, we see the same three kids trying to look over the left, although this time it was more fair to the shorter kids since there were more boxes piled for them to see over the fence. In that same sense, in the novel "Anthem" everyone is treated equally, as if everyone were one person. For this reason, it is unfair for the more intellectual kids that want to know more or that excel in certain things more than others since they are being treated like anyone else and they can't think for themselves and their future.

The connection between the novel and this image is that in both they are showed to be being treated equal, but that does not always mean there is justice. In "Anthem" they are treated the same by the way they are living and the laws they all must abide to. In the image all three people are given one box to stand on to see over the fence, but they are not all the same height so the shorter ones are not able to see showing that there is no justice. As for the novel, there is no justice because the council are the ones who choose their jobs. So while, some may prefer to pursue one specific career they don't get to do so and that may be because they look, say, or do things differently. which is completely unfair.

  18. The picture to the left shows equality, where all three people are given the same size box so that they are able to see over the fence. It is equal because they are all given one box of the same size, but the third person has a disadvantage because of his size he is not able to see with just one box. The picture to the right shows justice, where each are given the perfect amount of boxes they need to see over the fence. The connection between "Anthem" and this image is that they both show that being equal is not always justice. In "Anthem", everyone is treated equal(as if everyone was the same), but not everyone is given justice(do to diversity).

Equality is getting the same amount of something. that's why there's one box for each person in the first picture. Justice is, despite the different circumstances like their height, they still get the same outcome. In the second picture there's more boxes from someone who needs it so the view will be the same. you're not going to give a tall person three boxes but leave the shorter person with only one. This picture relates to the story because everyone is treated the same not considering the circumstances of different people.

  20. Equality is the state of being equal but is not always fair . In the other hand, justice is protecting rights and pushing wrong using fairness. The left image represent equality because they all have the same size box but is not fair because the little kid is not tall enough to see . The image on the right represents justice because it allowes the 3 person on the image to be able to watch the game and making everything fair by pushing the wrong from image 1 to a fairness status. This image applies to the noble because every is treated equal as if they were all the same but is not always fair. However, they don't give everyone justice since there all equal .

  21. In the novel everyone is equal, everyone is looked at as equal. But some are reprimanded for not being the same height, or weight, or even have the same facial structure. Equality has explained that he was criticized by his teachers for being taller than average height. In the picture, one of the boys there are too short to see with just one box. Under where it says "Justice", the shortest boy is given a second box so he can watch the baseball game. This isn't "special treatment", it's fairness. It is not his fault for being short, it's just in his genes. Everyone is different in their own ways. The society in the book needs to understand that. But instead of understanding that the boy can't see and helping him, they would just tell him that he shouldn't be short to avoid making him seem special and causing some type of riot. Which is, in no way, fair.

  22. In equality each person is standing on the same size box so the little bot has a disadvantage from the other two because he can not see the game. In justice they are all the same height because they gave the little boy more boxes to be the same height as the other two. In Anthem, everyone is treated as one or equally.

  23. In the novel everyone is looked up as equal. Everyone is the same basically just like in 'Equality' everyone has 1 box equal. Now in 'Justice' it's different in the sense where it's not everyone gets the same treatment but, a treatment that fits one another.Something that the novel yet does not have.

  24. The image shown is saying that although everyone is equal, not every one is given what they need, which isn't fair. In the equality part of the picture, everyone is given the same box, but it doesn't quite give them the same benefits as others, but in the justice part of it, everyone is treated how they should be treated and are given enough boxes to see over the fence. This relates to the novel in that everyone is equal, but not everyone is treated fairly.

  25. Equality is when everyone gets the same thing. Fairness and justice isn't the same thing for everyone. In the image on the left they each get a single box, without regarding the fact that they each have a different height. On the right, the person distributing the boxes realized that they all deserve a chance to see what's on the other side of the fence. So the shortest got 2 boxes, the middle one got one, and the tallest one is able to see the other side witout needing a box.

  26. The picture that is shown reflects to the Anthem because, not everyone can be treated or given things equally. Everyone is different in their own ways, not everyone is equally short or tall. Their is another word to explain the side that says justice, their is a difference between equality and equity. Equality means to give people the same thing, and equity means to give fairness in every situation. In the book Equality should be given equity because he is smarter and taller then the rest, he wants to be given a chance to use his knowledge. The shorter boy in the picture wants to be given a chance to see the ball game.

This picture reflects to the novel by showing the difference of justice and equality. Equality is shown in the novel because everyone is treated the same. For example if every was taught the same way that would be equality because every one gets the same buf justice is is for example if a kid had a learning disability he would be taught differently to his needs.

These two images show the difference between equality and justice. On the left it shows that all the boys have one box (showing equality) but the boy on the left really does not need it compared to the boy on the right even though he has one box as the other boys he is still unable to see the game. While on the right image it shows that even though they have different number of boxes they still have the same outcome this shows justice. This applies to the noble "Anthem" because everybody is treated the same and it's not fair for some of them that want to exceed and learn more.

This picture relates to "Anthem" by showing the difference between justice and equality. Treating everyone the same doesnt always mean is the right thing to do because everyone is different in their own way. In the nobel everyone is treated equally, but it doesnt actually shows justice. The images represent equality by everyone having the same amount of boxes, but thats not fair enough because some are taller than the other ones. Justice would be giving the right amount of boxes according to their height.

  30. What the image on the left is obviously showing equality, that no matter how tall or short everyone gets a box. Just like in the novel "Anthem", everyone is taught equally no matter how advanced or behind you get taught at the same pace with the same materials and the same lessons. The picture on the right is showing justice and how it's fair for the short boy to get more than one box so he can see the game and for the average boy to get one box so he can also see the game. Equality doesn't mean justice

This image ties in perfectly with "Anthem". Although everyone in the image has the same box to stand on, they don't all get the ability to see how everyone else does. If you are shorter, it is still unfair to you. In the novel, everyone is treated the same with no special treatment. Although this seems right, it isn't always fair and can still leave some with disadvantages.

  32. In the picture above there is equality, all three of them have one crate but it's still not justice because the child still can't see. In the story "Anthem" equality is represented because everybody is labeled and called the same, but there is no justice because the life they live of lies and always being in the dark about the rest of the world and everything that is true is not fair. Equality and justice may seem similar but in reality, they have very different meanings.

  33. Although I do believe what I said about the story representing equality but not justice is true, I personally think that the "council" just wants to give off the image and or illusion that everyone is equal when in reality they're really not, at least not at all times. And since they don't know any better, especially since they can't think for themselves, they all easily belive that they really are equal.

  34. In Anthem, everyone is held at the same level, as represented in the left half of the picture. However, that is not justice, for equality 7-2521 and the smallest child do not have justice, which is where disadvantages are taken into consideration and dealt with to make things more level with the others, not the same level and being forced to deal with such disability.

These images both show equality and justice. Both of these things are similar, but very different. In the first picture, it's showing "equality" by showing everyone with one box. The short boy cant see the game because he only has one box but its equal for all of them. Equality isnt always justice. In the second picture, the little boy is given two boxes so he'll be able to see the game and the middle boy is given one, so that he'll be more comfortable. That is justice, everyone was given what they needed so that everyone would be able to watch the game. In the novel, everyone is seen as an equal, and treated and taught the same, which isnt fair for those who want to exceed and learn more than others.

The first picture shows that equality is not always best , because some people might need more help than others , and some might not need help at all.We can also see from the first picture that even when it's equal for all 3 kids two of them have an advantage of being tall , which shows that equality can sometimes give an advantage to some individuals.

This image indicates equality since all three of the boys have a box but the smaller boy still can't seem to see the game even though he has the same box as everyone else which is equality not justice. The tallest boy gave the shortest boy his box so he was able to see, that's justice. In the novel, "Anthem" there is equality due to the fact that everybody is treated the same and is labeled the same but there is also no justice because it's not fair. The image is saying that equality and justice can be confused for having the same meaning, but very much are not the same. Equality means to treat everyone the same no matter who they are or what they do. While justice on the other hand means to be righteous. The way the people are treated with the boxes in the pictures clearly proves the two from each other. But this picture relates to the story "Anthem" by showing the difference between justice and equality. Also how treating everyone the same doesn't always necessarily make it fair and show justice.

What the image is saying is that equality and justice have two completely different meanings. Equality in the picture is that all the three people have a box to stand on but the little kid still can not see while the tall person can. So to get justice the little kid gets the box from the tall person to have a better view. This relates the "Anthem" because, everyone is treated the same and there is no favoritism
