Through the Looking Glass Project (Period 1)

You will pick one of the following projects to complete and present for a grade as well as a possible hour of community service:

               1.       Create an alphabet book using ideas from the novel. (You can work with a partner.)  

a.       Each page of the book must be based on an alphabet letter. 

b.      Have a sentence using the word.

c.       Have a picture related to the word.

d.      For optional community service hour you will present your book to the preschool class on one of the Fridays (April 15, 22, 29) or on one of the block days we are not testing.

               2.       Create a puppet show using one of the chapters or scenes from the novel.  (You can work with a partner.)

a.       You will design your own puppets.

b.      You will create your own script based on the chapter you have selected.

c.       For optional community service hour you will perform your puppet show to the preschool class on one of the Fridays (April 15, 22, 29) or on one of the block days we are not testing.

                3.       Take a classic nursery rhyme and bring it to life similar to what happened in novel.  (You can work with a partner.)

a.       Select a classic nursery rhyme.

b.      Create a chapter in which Alice would interact with the characters from the nursery rhyme.

c.       For optional community service hour you will teach the nursery rhyme to the preschool class on one of the Fridays (April 15, 22, 29) or on one of the block days we are not testing.

                4.       Turn your dreams into a Dream Journal. (No partners)

a.       Type up ten days of your dreams.  Write as much as you can remember about the dream.

b.      Reflect on each dream trying to understand what is going on in your real life that might have impacted your subconscious.  Think about how Alice’s adventures connected to her life as a child (nursery rhyme characters, being corrected by adults, etc.)

You will have until April 29th to complete and submit your project.

Great Expectations Project

Now that we have finished reading the book in class you will pick one of the following options for your project:

1.      Create a movie poster – your poster should include the title, author, and a scene or character from the novel

2.     Create a movie soundtrack – your soundtrack should have a song that connects with each of the major characters from the novel (Pip, Mrs. Joe, Joe, Estella, Ms. Havisham, Magwitch) and have one song that represents a theme from the novel (for example: ambition and self-improvement, guilt and innocence)

3.     Create a story board – you will create a timeline of the major events in the story, include drawings

4.     Create a map showing where the major events of the novel take place

Part of your grade will come from presenting what you did.

You can work with a partner on the project.

All projects will be due Thursday, April 7^th.

Worth 20 points (grade will count for the 4th nine weeks)

Flowers and Insects Homework assignment

After reading Chapters 2 & 3, I want you to select a flower or insect that represents you.  You can either draw the flower or insect yourself or print out a picture.
In a paragraph below your picture, explain why that flower or insect embodies who you are as a person.
Due Friday, April 1st.

  

Through the Looking Glass Chapter 1 assignment

In Chapter One Alice crosses over to the other side of the looking glass (mirror) and describes an alternate universe where chess pieces are alive.
I want you to find a mirror in your house and describe what you see in the mirror, but write it from the point-of-view of a child.  Are the things in the mirror alive?  Can they do things that in our world are not possible?
Try to get into an "imaginative" frame of mind.
You can write it or type it.  Bring it to class tomorrow (3/30/16).

AP class: Trascendentalism Week

Thoreau's Walden video

This week we will be covering Emerson and Thoreau – two American Transcendentalists.

Part 1:

After watching the brief video, you will select a number, which represents a piece by Emerson or Thoreau.

You can refer to the following links:

You will read the piece, select 5 quotes from the piece and complete the following:

1.  Explain the quote in your own words

2.  How does the quote connect to the ideals of transcendentalism?

3.  Do you agree or disagree with the quote?  Explain your answer.

You can work with a partner for this part.

You will be presenting your findings on Thursday and Friday to the class.  

You can use Powerpoint, Prezi or another similar program.

Part 2:

Emerson and Thoreau can be considered philosophers of their time.  Think of your own life and create a list of things that you feel are essential in your life.  You will write your own essay where you break down your list and explain each idea.

You must have at least 5 ideas on your list, which means you would have at least 5 paragraphs in your essay.

Due typed by Friday.
